To enable the full enjoyment of the amenities, Miami Conservancy District constructs and maintains recreation factilities including bike trails, river access, stairways, signs, fences, railways, lighting systems, benches, trash receptacles, landscaped areas and more.
Funding
Funds to maintain recreation amenities are generated by assessments levied against townships, cities, and counties where the amenities are located. In Montgomery County, funds are also made available through an inter-governmental agreement with Five Rivers MetroParks. Projects and programs are also funded with local, state, and private sources, including grants, donations, and land use fees.
Recreation Trails
Miami Conservancy District continues to build new trail sections, and repair trail as needed. Miami Conservancy District also advocates for the missing sections of trail that will one day create an uninterrupted Great Miami River Recreation Trail from Shelby County in the north to Hamilton County in the south through the riverfront communities along the Great Miami River corridor. Over the years, MCD has added miles to the bikeway and currently maintains about 30 miles of bike trails. A total of more than 50 miles of bike trails are built on MCD land.
Public Access to MCD Lands
The land that is utilized for the flood protection system also provides unparalleled public access to the Great Miami River and its tributaries. More than 20 public jurisdictions in five counties hold permits to operate parks, trails and related attractions on Miami Conservancy District land.
Water Trails
Miami Conservancy District manages boat ramps, boat docks, river access, low dams, and parking lots to help river users access the rivers safely. Water trails maps are updated regularly and show public access points, river miles, safety information and more.
