National Media Spotlights Urgent Infrastructure Needs at MCD Dam

The Guardian published a national news story highlighting the growing risks faced by communities in southwest Ohio due to aging flood protection infrastructure — with a spotlight on Huffman Dam and the Miami Conservancy District (MCD) system.

“More than 18,000 properties downstream of Huffman Dam are at risk of flooding over the next three decades,” the Guardian reports, pointing to federal funding rollbacks and increased severe weather as key threats to dam safety.

The story underscores what MCD has been sounding the alarm about for years: our century-old dams and levees are working harder than ever to protect our communities, but without major reinvestment, that protection is at risk. Since 1913, this system has prevented catastrophic flooding — but it cannot do so forever without repairs and modernization.

“Our system has experienced 2,170 storage events. The flood in April ranked 12th,” said MaryLynn Lodor, MCD’s general manager. “It would be very difficult for this to be on the backs of the locals.”

The MCD is actively advocating for state and federal investment to repair and strengthen this critical infrastructure, which protects lives, property, local economies, and clean water.
